Padres News: Bob Melvin is Trying to Not Look at MLB Standings Too Much
It has been a tough season for the San Diego Padres so far. They came into the season with heavy expectations for themselves, but they haven’t come to fruition to this point.
The Padres have been playing catch-up all season in the standings and continue to do so. They haven’t been able to put together any sort of consistency in games, and it has cost them.
With only a little over a month left in the season, it’s go time for the Friars. However, manager Bob Melvin isn’t trying to look at the standings too much and is just letting things play out.
“It’s one of the reasons you don’t want to look at (the standings) too much,” Melvin said. “It feels like, all right, what does this team have to do, when it should all just be about us. That’s winning some games, hopefully passing some teams, but when you start looking ahead of you it feels a little more daunting.”

It’s a smart strategy to not standings watch because that just puts more pressure on themselves. The Padres just need to give it their all and hope for the best.
San Diego has been trying to get back to .500 for quite some time now, and each time they get close, it goes downhill for them.
“That would be great,” Melvin said recently. “We’ve been right on the verge a couple of times and once you get over .500, based on the third wild-card team, (it) might not ... take being (a ton) over .500, but that’s certainly where we aspire to get.”

The Padres have their work cut out for them the rest of the way. They need to leapfrog multiple teams, while also making sure they start to play well.
It will be a tall task, but it's not over yet. As long as they still have games to be played, there is a chance for them to make a run toward the postseason.
