Padres News: Bob Melvin Managing to Keep Team Together Past Deadline
Since the Padres are reportedly on the fence about being sellers at the deadline, manager Bob Melvin has the challenge of keeping his team concentrating on their games and not on the rumors.
“We’re all concentrating on trying to make sure that we’re not in a position where anybody gets moved,” manager Bob Melvin said before Saturday's game. “I mean, we’re kind of right on that cusp.”
The Padres are having a disappointing season when they are in fourth place in the National League Western Division, 9 games behind. While the Padres should have been contenders after spending big in the offseason, their superstars have underperformed.
To help the club's case to hold on to its talent, the Padres won on Friday and Saturday, beating the first place Texas Rangers.
Joe Musgrove, a subject of trading rumors, is concentrating on helping the Padres win this season. He echoed Melvin's sentiment.
“I think everyone’s starting to realize where we’re at in the season and the sense of urgency we got to have. I think the attitude, the mentality, the aggressiveness tonight on the basepaths, at the plate, really good defense all around — that’s the kind of baseball we got to play down the stretch."
While it looks like an uphill battle for the Padres to reach the postseason even as a National League Wild Card, they're trying to put themselves in a position to hold on to the roster they have and stay in the race for as long as they can.
And it starts with winning that day's game.
