Calling the 2023 San Diego Padres season a letdown so far wouldn't even be doing it justice. It has been a terrible start to the year for a team that came into the season with World Series aspirations. The team is currently eight games under .500 and just finished their recent road trip against the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds with a record of 1-5.

The offense continues to be inconsistent except for a few games at a time and the pitching can't be relied upon every time out.

Things seem to be getting worse for this team before anything gets better and the Padres fine themselves in a major hole as the All-Star break approaches.

"With six games remaining, the best the Padres (38-46) can be at the All-Star break is two games below .500. That would require a winning streak two games longer than any they have had this season and one game longer than any they had in 2021."

However, manager Bob Melvin isn't worried about the team's record but instead wants them to focus on just winning baseball games.

“We’re past that at this point — to where we’re just trying to win games,” Melvin said. “Yesterday was a feel-good one. Come back and have a tie game today and feel like we have a good chance to win the game. We lose again. We’ve experienced this one quite a bit. So we have to pick ourselves up and get home. Every series right now is a big series for us.”

The longer the issues of this team continue to go on, the harder it will be to come back from. The National League has a ton of talent in it and there are multiple teams ahead of San Diego for any potential playoff spots right now.

The Padres have put themselves into a very unfavorable position and need to start picking up wins quickly. If they don't, this team will go down as one of the biggest letdowns in recent baseball history.

“It’s been a lot of tough losses lately,” Xander Bogaerts said. “It’s been really tough.”
