Padres News: Bob Melvin Praises Front Office for Signing Michael Wacha
There weren’t many positives that came out of the San Diego Padres 2023 season. The team entered the year with high expectations after a stellar offseason, but failed to live up to the pressure, and missed the playoffs entirely.
It was a frustrating year all around for those involved with the team, as they couldn’t put together any sort of consistency on the field until it was too late. But their signing of starting pitcher Michael Wacha proved to be a good one, and he made sure that he was one of the lone bright spots for the season.
Manager Bob Melvin praised the front office for the signing and was very appreciative of what Wacha did for the team this season.
“Tremendous pickup,” Melvin said of Wacha. “Everything he brings to the table from his competitiveness to his clubhouse presence -- everything. This is a really good pitcher and a sensational year for him.”

The veteran had a great year and now will likely see a nice payday this winter. He holds a mutual option with San Diego for next season, but he could opt out for more money due to his strong year.
He isn’t sure if he will return to the Padres and will let things play out. After the year he put together, he has more than earned that.
“I honestly have no idea what to expect,” Wacha said. “... There’s definitely going to be some decisions to be made on both sides. When the time comes, we’ll be ready.”

For the season, Wacha posted an ERA of 3.22 and a WHIP of 1.16. He was one of the more consistent guys for the Friars, and it showed every time that he took the mound.
“I felt like whenever I was out there, I was one of the best guys in the league,” Wacha said.

A return to San Diego next season would be nice for everyone, especially since the Padres may lose some pieces to free agency. He would provide the team with solid depth to have in the rotation and gives him a chance to continue his career with some familiarity.
