Padres News: Bob Melvin Reaching Last Straw with Friars
There are very few team managers in the MLB that will go out of their way to stand up for their players the way that Bob Melvin does for the San Diego Padres. The Friars sit at 19-19 and are currently coming off of losing two straight series to both the LA Dodgers and Minnesota Twins.
Despite LA being one of the more seasoned teams over the course of the last few seasons and the Twins having established themselves as a top defensive squad, most of these games could've very well went in favor of San Diego and Melvin is well-aware of this.
In their final game against the Twins before heading to LA to face off against the Dodgers once again, the Friars fell 3-5 and Melvin got so livid after some questionable calls from the umpire that he got thrown out before the eighth inning kicked off.
Outside of just the officiating, he had to have been feeling very frustrated with his squad's continuing struggles at the plate. He's been nothing but optimistic all season long but following Thursday's loss, we started to see a whole different side of him.
He didn't hold back in bringing up the lack of success from his roster despite the talent that they possess.
“We have guys that can perform better, and we’re going to, but it’s time to quit just talking about it,” said Melvin. “It’s time to go out there and do it. Another frustrating game for us. Underperformed.”

“We’ve just got to fight a little harder and expect a little bit more of ourselves — all of us, myself included,” said Melvin. “We have not done that to this point. These stretches happen. But it’s gone on too long. We’ve got to break through here at some point.”

Let's hope the Friars learn from not just this series but also the one from last weekend and string together three solid days of baseball against the first-place Dodgers.
