In this story:

Just when we thought the Friars were starting to find themselves again and competing from the jump, they allow four runs in the second inning and get zero offensive production from their most cherished superstars. Plenty of runners were left on base again and it resulted in a 5-3 loss to the Washington Nationals.

Ha-Seong Kim and Rougned Odor came through with their own big hits but as we are reminded time and time again, they are not the ones receiving massive contracts. San Diego's top five hitters in their Wednesday lineup combined to go 0-17 in their at-bat's and it is just nearly impossible to win when that is the case.

The Friars struggle heavily to make comebacks late in the game , as they've won just two matches this year when trailing after the sixth inning versus losing 22 in those situations.

The questions have to be frustrating for Bob Melvin at this point. He is placing his stars in places where they succeed only to see none of them come through in a game like this.

Many fans jumped on Ryan Weathers for his mistakes in the second inning but Melvin reverted attention for their defense as a whole messing up and also their offense for only garnering four hits the entire night. He also had plenty of words regarding San Diego's late-game composure.

"We had ten walk-off wins at home last year," said Melvin. "We only have one right now, it's been a problem for us. We should be able to push through and answer the challenge late in the game. We have the guys to do it, we just have not at this point."

The comparisons between the 2022 and 2023 Padres squads are starting to roll in heavy as fans are confused as to why the lack of energy and heart is evident this year. San Diego has one last match today against the Nationals to try and take home the series.
