The San Diego Padres had one of their most embarrassing outings on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Padres dropped their 42nd game of the season and will officially finish with a below .500 record in the first half of the season, just like we all predicted, right?
The 2023 Padres are on pace to go down as the most disappointing teams in MLB history, and a ton of it is due to their lack of hits and offensive productivity.
That's exactly what happened on Tuesday night. Although the Padres were able to collect 11 hits, they only produced four runs. A series loss to the lonely Nationals and to start the Pirates series on a sour note is what the Friars have been all season long.
Bob Melvin didn't see what he liked in particular with his bats.
“When you start somebody that’s gonna give you limited pitches, you might give up some runs,” Melvin said. “We have to know offensively we have to do a little bit more than just score three runs in the second inning.”

The pitching, who have been the backbone of the team this season, wasn't up to par in the series' first game. Padres ace Yu Darvish was supposed to start on Tuesday but came down with an illness. So, righty pitcher Reiss Knehr made the start and went two innings, allowing six hits and five earned runs that earned him a loss.
The Padres hitting knew they would be going in without their ace, and although the three-run inning was nice, they failed to carry that momentum beyond the third inning.
Nothing seems to be going right for your Friars, and it's becoming a bit concerning. It's looking like San Diego will need to miracle to turn this season around.
