The 2023 season wasn’t supposed to go this way for the San Diego Padres. It was supposed to be a crowning season for a franchise that is looking for its first-ever World Series title.

After defeating their rival in the postseason last year and then putting together a strong offseason, San Diego believed it was their time. But fate has had other ideas this season.

It has been an overly frustrating season for the Friars as the team hasn’t been able to put together any sort of consistency. It has caused them to be playing catch-up in the standings all year long.

Things hit another low over the weekend as the Padres dropped three of four games to the Arizona Diamondbacks in front of the Petco Park faithful. Arizona sits right ahead of them in the standings, so this was almost like a gut punch.

After the doubleheader loss on Saturday, manager Bob Melvin summed up the season for the Padres in one sentence,

“This has not been the easiest season in the world,” Melvin said, “and it seems like everything that can go wrong does.”

The team has continued to try and fight back into contention. Yet every time there is a sliver of hope, they fall back into old routines.

It has been like clockwork for this squad all season long, and they are starting to run out of time.

“You don’t explain it,” Melvin said. “You just have to keep digging. We put ourselves in this position and continue to. You just keep fighting until you get it right."

San Diego still has time to turn things around, but the clock is ticking. If they can't get back into contention, this season will go down as one of the biggest letdowns in baseball history.

It's starting to look like a lost season for the Friars, but with games left to play, there is still hope. But things need to start happening soon, otherwise, changes will need to be made to this squad.
