As critical and disappointed in the Padres many have been this season, one thing that cannot be taken away from them is that they care.

Were they a little too comfortable dropping some early games that are haunting them now? Probably. Would polishing up on some mistakes and reads on both ends have let to more wins? Definitely.

But we have to focus on the reality and that is that the Friars currently boast a 19-20 record and any more games that they allow the Dodgers to win over them will give LA even more cushion under their number one seed in the NL West.

And Friday's 4-2 loss at Dodger Stadium continued to add wood to the burning fire of frustration that has slowly been growing in recent weeks. Team manager Bob Melvin was more vocal than ever leading up to this weekend series, calling out his players for not living up to their offensive potential.

The likes of Fernando Tatis Jr, Xander Bogaerts and others had a lot to say after San Diego failed to start the series off on the right foot.

“We are fighting,” Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts said. “It’s really hard when you come back in a game, the energy is right there and then just — boom — back-to-back. It’s a little tough. Hill has been really good the whole year. You can’t count on the relievers to throw up zeroes. They’ll have their days also.

It looked like the Friars could once again pull out the victory but after giving up back-back-to-back home runs to Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, that dream was put to rest.

Manny Machado was not feeling any interviews today as he left immediately after the game.

San Diego's stars had a chance to match the Dodgers in the eighth inning but failed to do so and like Bogaerts said, they have to live with it.

“We actually had a good chance (in the eighth) inning,” Bogaerts said. “… We had our big boys coming up in that inning. We’ve got to live with that. The big boys don’t do it, go to bed and come in tomorrow.”

We'll see everyone at 4:15 pm PT for what is hopefully a bounce back game!
