For a few short weeks, there was thought that all the news about Bob Melvin leaving the Padres was over. But it seems that we are far from it being over, as insider Dennis Lin is reporting that San Diego has granted Melvin permission to interview with the San Francisco Giants for their open managerial role.

There had been some talk about this situation playing out, even after the Padres announced that Melvin would return, but now it seems it could become a reality. If Melvin were to leave for San Francisco, one of the Padres division rivals would be getting a great manager.

The two have been linked together for some time now, and it would make sense due to the ties that Melvin has with people in the Giants front office. He would fit very well with the Giants, and he could be the missing leader for this team. Melvin has been great at mixing both an old-school approach to the game, with the new reliance on analytics, so it could be a great pairing.

San Francisco has had trouble landing any big-time stars in recent years, but Melvin is well-respected around the league. This could help them this offseason, as the Giants are expected to be very active in free agency.

If Melvin leaves, the Padres would have an immediate opening to fill. But it would also be one of the more attractive spots for candidates. San Diego has a good core in place, and even if they lose some pieces this offseason, they have plenty of talent.

This certainly will be something to watch over the next few days, but it seems that Melvin may be gone. After the year that the Padres just put together, it may be best for the two sides to part ways.
