It has been a very mediocre year for the San Diego Padres. It started with a ton of hype and excitement but has been them trying to climb the ladder of the standings in reality.

The team hasn't been able to put together any sort of real winning streak to get themselves back into contention, and it has cost them. As we head into the middle of August, they are still multiple games back of a wild card spot. But there is still hope yet.

There are still games to be played, and this team has a ton of firepower. A few strong weeks of play and the Padres could make a real run at this thing. Manager Bob Melvin knows this and is tired of the excuses from his club.

“I mean, as far as talking, explaining, rationalizing, all these things — we just have to perform,” manager Bob Melvin said before Friday's game. “And right now, we’re in a situation where we have to. No ifs, ands or buts. It’s about actions.”

Per The Athletic

Melvin is correct that it's about action and not talk. The Friars have been talking all season long, with nothing to show for it.

They are losing time to make their comeback, so time is of the essence. The team opened their weekend series against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a win, but they can't let that define the series.

"The Padres, if they want to salvage something from this season, have to forget about Friday. Saturday awaits."

Arizona sits just ahead of them in the wild-card standings, so any win over them is massive. The Padres need to keep their winning ways going strong if they want any chance to make a run.

Their push for the postseason needs to start now, otherwise, they will go down as one of the biggest letdowns in baseball history.
