Padres News: Fernando Tatis Jr Happy to Be Back in the Infield
Earlier this week, Fernando Tatis Jr. played second base. He loved it. For most of the 2023 season, Tatis has played right field for the Padres. He's actually taken the transition to the outfield well. However, he's voiced his desire to eventually end up back on the infield dirt in his career.
He spoke with reporters about his one inning in the infield and new utility player status.
“It was good to be back on the diamond,” Tatis said. “It was a happy moment. I feel like that’s really huge — not so much myself, just as a baseball player — being able to contribute where you need it. I’m definitely one of those guys.”
Tatis came in to the major leagues as a shortstop. While he was dynamic, he had erratic throws at times and added to his own injury troubles with diving plays that contributed to a separated shoulder, that eventually required surgery.
The San Diego Padres thought playing right field would reduce the risk of injury for Tatis. Although this season was the first in right field for Tatis, he has made himself into a good right fielder, and he eventually will win a Gold Glove in right field.
Playing second base probably gave Tatis a break. Running from right field to right field every half inning is tiring. Since hitters don’t hit as many balls to the outfield as they do to the infield, players can get bored. Outfielders must find ways to keep their concentration on the game.
Switching positions is difficult. It can affect a player’s offensive performance. In 2023, Tatis has a .260 batting average, 23 home runs, 71 RBI, and a .784 OPS. It is a decent offensive season, but baseball people and the Padres expected more offensive production from Tatis.
When the Padres are out of the playoff picture, it is good for Tatis to find enjoyment in playing baseball.
