The Colorado Rockies made a roster move this week, adding a former Padres catcher to the team following his hot start in the Red Sox organization.

The Rockies selected the contract of Jorge Alfaro this week, according to Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors, and optioned fellow catcher Brian Serven to Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move. Colorado designated pitcher Blair Calvo for assignment in order to make room for Alfaro on their 40-man roster.

Alfaro made his Rockies debut that same night, going 0-for-4 on the day in an 8-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

The 30 year old played for the Padres in 2022, putting up a slash line of .246/.285/.383 with seven home runs and 40 RBI over 82 games for San Diego.

Before being signed by Colorado, Alfaro was performing well for the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate.

He was slashing .320/.366/.520 on the season with six HR's and 30 RBI over 43 games.

Alfaro later exercised an MLB opt out clause in his contract, and the Red Sox released him instead of promoting him to Boston, leading to his latest stop in Colorado.

For now, he'll try to get his legs underneath him in the majors again and try to make an impact for a Rockies team that's currently last in the NL West with a 29-42 record on the year.

Serven, whom the Rockies optioned to Triple-A as part of the Alfaro move, was struggling for Colorado in his second MLB season, hitting 3-for-23 over 11 games in Denver.

So while Serven tries to make his way back up to the majors, Alfaro joins an impressive Rockies backstop group despite the team's struggles.

Colorado starting catcher Elias Diaz is putting up good numbers on the year with a slash line of .294/.349/.467 to go along with seven homers and 34 runs driven in.

If Alfaro can produce in his chances for the Rockies, that could go a long way for him getting another shot in the majors next season, whether with Colorado or another franchise.
