Padres News: Frairs Call Up Drew Carlton, Option Ryan Weathers, Lefty Reliever to 60-Day IL

More bad news for the Friars

Last week was a nightmare for your San Diego Padres, and they will now look for a better week this time around. The Padres will start this week by taking on the Kansas City Royals at home; however, they made some moves prior to tonight's matchup and received some bad news in the process. 

The team announced they have optioned lefty pitcher Ryan Weathers and are calling up RHP Drew Carlton from Triple-A affiliate. On top of that, the team also announced they are moving LHP Drew Pomeranz to the 60-day IL.

Weathers made his fourth start of the season on Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers and will now return to Triple-A for RHP Drew Carlton, who has yet to make his 2023 season debut. 

In 13 games with the El Paso Chiuchahas, Carlton has gone 2-1 with a 1.13 ERA; he's struck out 18 batters, allowed only five walks, a .200 batting average, and a 1.00 WHIP in 16 innings. The 27-year-old signed a minor league deal with the Padres this past off-season. 

Will we ever get to see Drew Pomeranz pitch for the Padres again? Pomeranz hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2021, and his status for the 2023 season looks dire. 

Padres insider Kevin Acee reported that he was experiencing some discomfort in his throwing arm a couple of weeks ago during his latest rehab appearance. It's been a roller coaster ride for Drew as he's had roadblock after roadblock in his way, and he can't seem to escape it. This has become a common occurrence for the southpaw, and fans are becoming frustrated with his absence. 

We wish Pomeranz the best in his recovery, Carlton luck in his time in the big leagues, and hopefully, we can see Weathers stay for good soon.
