Padres News: Friars Big 4 Find Themselves in Unfamiliar Territory in All-Star Voting
The 93rd annual MLB All-Star game takes place next month in Seattle, home of the Mariners. The All-star game is a time to celebrate the best ball players that the league has to offer and is always a festive event.
It also celebrates players' tremendous first half of a season, and many will be making their first appearance. If you're a team like the Padres, who have multiple-time All-stars, it's nothing new, but it's always special to participate in it. The question is if Padre fans will be able to see their players in the All-Star game.
The Padres possibly have the best big four in the league, and although it hasn't accumulated to a great record, each of them has had a solid 2023 campaign. If you don't know who I'm referring to, I'm talking about Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Juan Soto. These four have been All-Stars, but could we see them accomplish it in 2023? At the moment, some of them are in the outside looking in.
Bogaerts is in third place in the NL shortstop position with 209,144 votes behind Mets star Francisco Lindor and Braves Orlando Arcia leading with 406,509 votes. He has been dealing with a wrist injury that has kept him out for quite a while, which has limited his play a bit. We'll see if he can find the groove he was on to start the season.
Manny is also on the outside looking in as he sits fifth in the third base position with 191,629 votes. Cardinals star Nolan Arendo and Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy are two of the four in front of him. You could point to the fifth-place vote to Machado being in the IL for most of May.
Then you have the outfielders, Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr. Tatis Jr. missed the first 20 games of the season but would still get in the All-Star game at sixth among outfielders. Fernando has a total of 207,474 votes. Soto would also get in, but not as a starter being fourth in the voting with 339,009 votes. These outfielders are looking more and more like the superstars we expect them to be. If they can continue to play to their abilities for the next month or so, we could see them both start in the kid-summer classic.
The Padres seem to have found themselves, likewise with these star players. We'll see if they can hit their stride and represent the Friars in Seattle next month.
