Padres News: Insider Ranks Friars as Top 5 Biggest Disaster in MLB This Season
After making a big splash in 2022 free agency, many people believed that the Padres were World Series contenders this season.
Fast forward a couple months later and the Padres are out of a playoff spot and under .500 with less than 50 games remaining.
Jon Heyman of The New York Post has called the Padres one of the biggest disasters in baseball after having all the preseason hype, coming in at No. 5 on his list.
"Mathematically, they are an impossibility. How can you have a plus-64 run differential and still be under .500? Well, you go 6-19 in one-run games and 0-10 in extra-inning games."

Heyman is not happy with what the Padres have done this year, and rightfully so.
The team committed to large contracts by signing Xander Bogaerts to an 11-year/$280 million deal while extending Manny Machado for 11, years as well. At this point, those could turn into disaster contracts sooner rather than later.
Heyman also included the Yankees, White Sox, Mets and Cardinals on his list of biggest disappointments this year.
Out of all those teams, however, the Padres are the only ones that still have a chance to make the playoffs.
The Dodgers are running away with the NL West and are 17 games ahead of the Friars. In the Wild Card, the Padres are 5 games out of the final spot.
As well as calling them an impossibility, Heyman has called the Padres unlucky.
It doesn't happen very often that a team is so lopsided when it comes to one-run and extra-inning games.
The Padres are running out of time to make the playoffs but if luck turns their way, they could make a run if they can just get in.
