Padres News: Juan Soto Addresses Future in San Diego
San Diego Padres superstar Juan Soto has two more years left on his contract. When it's up, at the end of the 2024 season, he's going to be one of the most sought after free agents ever — people are expecting him to potentially get a similar contract to the one that Shohei Ohtani is going to get this offseason, just with more years.
However, for now, Soto doesn't have to think that far ahead. He knows he still has two years in San Diego, and wants to help bring the city a championship.
But at the team's FanFest this past weekend, he was asked about his potential long-term future. Here's what he had to say:
"I mean, I have two more years here. I think that’s a long time. If you go day-by-day, I try to enjoy every moment, every second I’m here, like I did in the Nationals. And I’m happy to be here. And I’ll have two more years and we will see what’s going to happen after that."
This isn't exactly reassuring for Padres fans, but also, we shouldn't expect him to say a lot. First of all, a lot can happen in two years. But second of all, he's likely to want to test the free agent market and see how much money is truly out there for him.
But again, there's no point of thinking that far ahead. For now, Soto is under contract for the next two seasons, and their front office has done everything they can to build a winning team. We can start talking about the potential of Soto leaving next offseason.
