Padres News: Manny Machado Encourages Fans to Boo when Friars Deserve It
If there is one thing about Padres fans that will never change, it's that they will wear their emotions all over their sleeves. Known for being some of the most passionate, energetic, and most die-hard fanbases in the entire MLB, it's going to be an electric environment in Petco Park this season when the Friars are winning games.
However, that reputation doesn't just disappear if things aren't necessarily going their way. One could argue that this is when their true colors show even more and they let the Friars players know that they are not meeting expectations.
The 2022 season was a rollercoaster one for San Diego to say the least. Their offense struggled to remain consistent through the months and Manny Machado had to perform at heroic levels just to keep the team afloat. However, they were able to click at the right time and take out both the Mets and the Dodgers en route to a NLCS appearance.
Machado recently spoke about San Diego's fan culture throughout those games and detailed it as one that loved them when they were winning but also held them accountable when they were slacking (per Darnay Tripp).
"They also gave us a little boos here and there when we weren't winning," said Machado. "That means the word to us seeing that there's expectations for us to go out and perform every single day."

The 30-year-old slugger should expect no different coming into 2023. The Friars were viewed as the underdogs going into those series last year but that will no longer be the case. With a revamped roster and stars coming back from injuries, they have all the tools they need to acquire some hardware.
Fans have not been shy to let them know this and they want to see their Padres capture the city its first World Series title.
