If you felt a gust of wind in Southern California early Saturday afternoon, it wasn't a tropical storm or an overly-powerful windmill. It was the sigh of relief from Padres fans statewide as the Friars finally got back in the win column.

The Padres won their first game in over a week Saturday, beating the Reds 12-5 in Cincinnati. Seven different Padres recorded a hit, Juan Soto hit a three-run homer and Manny Machado recorded two home runs in a much-needed win for San Diego.

"I forgot what it felt like (to win)," Machado said. "It's been a while."

It had been an unsightly couple of weeks for the Padres, with a 1-3 series loss to the Giants, a 1-2 series loss to the Nationals and a 0-3 sweep by the Pirates. As the trade deadline approaches, manager Bob Melvin and general manager AJ Preller have said that the teams' ability to win games will dictate how the Padres operate before Aug. 1.

“We’ve let a lot slip away, and it feels good to get a win,” Machado said. “... I think the last few days we’ve been playing some good baseball. Things have been feeling a lot different — different energy. And hopefully, things start turning our way.”

During their losing streak, the Padres scored fewer than 3 runs per game as seemingly every Padre slugger was going through a slump. Saturday's game showed what the potential ceiling of the powerful Padres offense, as expensive as it is, could look like.

Or perhaps the floor; the Reds pitchers that took the mound Saturday are no Cy Young candidates, and with a laundry list of sluggers, the Padres' offense should be one of the highest-scoring in the league.
