As the year winds down, the San Diego Padres are still in playoff contention, but their chances seem bleak. It may be time to wave the white flag on this frustrating year altogether.

We could see the first sign of that here soon with star third baseman Manny Machado. He has been dealing with an elbow injury but has wanted to play through it to try and help his guys win. But with there they are in the standings, he could be shut down soon to avoid further injury,

“There is a possibility that third baseman Manny Machado, who has been limited to serving as the designated hitter due to what is described as “tennis elbow,” could be shut down.”

Machado may have to get surgery over the offseason to deal with the injury. It’s something that has been lingering all year, so it could make sense to operate on it to heal.

“Offseason surgery is said to be a possibility for Machado. While most instances of tennis elbow get better with rest and rehab, this is the second season Machado has dealt with the injury, which consists of inflammation and possible tears in the tendons around the elbow. And the effects recently are more frequent and severe.”

Credit to Machado for trying to gut it out, but there is no point in continuing to risk more injury. Both sides need to have an honest discussion about this and sit him down for the rest of the season.

This year has gone from bad to worse for the Friars. With the way that the San Diego Padres season has gone, this offseason will bring change to the organization. Most of the time when a team underwhelms like this, the manager is the first person to go, so Bob Melvin’s job status is in question.

Their offseason will be one of the more interesting to watch this winter. Things could look very different come next season for this team.
