Padres News: Manny Machado Signs Massive 11-Year Extension to Stay in San Diego
Manny Machado and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a massive 11-year, $350 million extension to keep the superstar third baseman in San Diego for the remainder of his career. Jeff Passan of ESPN was first to report on the massive deal.
Machado, who has become the heart and soul of this ascending Padres team, said a few weeks ago that he was going to opt out of his contract, and seek a larger contract.
While it was initially reported that the two sides were far off on a deal, clearly, Peter Seidler and the Padres made it work.
Machado is coming off a season in which he finished second in the National League MVP voting. He slashed .298/.366/.531 with 32 home runs, 102 RBIs and 37 doubles, with an OPS of .898 and an OPS+ of 159.
The six-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award winner has found a home at third base in San Diego, and has been one of the best defenders in the league at the position.
He's helped this Padres team completely turn around their club, and will be a part of their quest to bring a World Series trophy to San Diego for the first time.
