If I told you that at the start of July, it was a real possibility that both the San Diego Padres and New York Mets could miss the postseason, you likely wouldn’t believe me at all. Yet, that is exactly where we stand for the 2023 MLB season.

The Mets have their own issues but for the Padres, it has been a complete letdown so far. They were expected to take that next step towards being a championship team but the pressure of the expectations has weighed on this team.

San Diego currently sits in fourth place in the NL West and has a major uphill battle to climb to just get back into playoff contention. It's been so bad for the Friars that MLB writer Brandon Scott for Bleacher Report has seen enough and is predicting that the Padres will miss the postseason.

"The Padres are a top-heavy lineup that is hitting just .232 as a team while hovering around the Mendoza line with runners in scoring position. As opposed to adding at the deadline, they may need to trade free-agent-to-be Blake Snell to secure more depth for the roster in the years to come."

Per Bleacher Report

If the Padres did indeed miss the postseason entirely, it would be one of the biggest organizational letdowns in recent memory. But they have a major challenge ahead of them due to the hole they are in.

With the extra postseasons spots, the Padres have a chance still but it'll require other teams to start losing. San Diego can't afford to not win the majority of their series from here on out as well.

The Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants are real threats for a postseason spot. And then you have the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have started to play much better recently themselves. These are just the teams in their own division. The Philadelphia Phillies, Miami Marlins and Milwaukee Brewers are all playing well and are ahead of the Padres right now for postseason spot.

San Diego has time to salvage the season but they can't wait any longer. The time to do something is starting to run out as we've hit July. If they can't turn things around, there will be consequences and decisions to be made going forward.
