Padres News: Nick Martinez Proving Versatility in Any Pitching Scenario
Despite beginning the year as a starter, Friars pitcher Nick Martinez has worn a bevy of different hats for San Diego's staff this season.
Undefined by any set role at this point in the season, Martinez reflected on his mentality to simply get the job done no matter when he might appear on the mound for the Padres.
“That might be a mindset thing more than anything. Kind of come to the ballpark ready to pitch and again, same as last year, kind of setting my priorities to kind of do whatever we can to help win. Whatever it takes. If it helps us (get) a step closer to winning a World Series, then I’m up for that.”

This year isn't the first time where Martinez has had to be a chameleon of sorts for the Padres. After he signed to the team on a three-year deal, Martinez became the first pitcher in MLB history to make at least 10 starts and also have at least eight saves and eight holds.
Considering the typical makeup of dominant late game closers for shorter outings and a normal starting pitcher's role to eat innings, it's quite impressive that Martinez has been able to be both a bulk starter and high leverage arm out of the pen again this season.
After being drafted by the Rangers in 2011, Martinez played four major league seasons in Texas before continuing his career in Japan.
He returned to the big leagues for the Friars and the investment is proving to be a valuable one for the Padres considering fellow pitchers Joe Musgrove's most recent scratched start and Michael Wacha's return from his shoulder issue still to be determined.
Thankfully for the fans at Petco, Martinez's role in San Diego has helped keep the team afloat in the hunt for a National League Wild Card spot.
