Padres News: Rich Hill Goes Through Waivers Unclaimed, Remains With San Diego
Padres LHP Rich Hill went unclaimed on waivers on Wednesday, and will remain with San Diego for the remainder of the season. Rob Bradford of WEEI reported the news.
The Padres placed Hill on waivers on Tuesday, hoping to offload the remaining $800 thousand-plus remaining on his contract. However, no team wanted to add him for the last few weeks of the season, so Hill will remain in San Diego.
If a team claimed Hill, he wouldn't have been postseason eligible. So a team would have added him just to help for the last three weeks of the regular season, which wouldn't have really made much of a difference.
Hill has struggled mightily in San Diego since being acquired at the trade deadline from the Pittsburgh Pirates alongside Ji-Man Choi.
In eight appearances, Hill has a 9.25 ERA. He had a 4.76 ERA in 22 starts with the Pirates.
Choi's time wasn't any better, as he went hitless in 11 at-bats before going on the injured list. Then, when on a rehab assignment, he fractured his ankle, ending his 2023 season.
That trade has turned out to be one of the worst of the entire deadline, and the Padres weren't able to fully close the door on it this week.
Hill will finish out the season with San Diego, and then almost certainly have a new home come the offseason if he chooses to keep playing.
