Despite going through a disappointing season in San Diego this year, the Padres have found a bright spot in the bullpen.

Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter came out with his list of the 50 best first-year MLB players this season, and one Friar narrowly made the list as Tim Cosgrove came in at No. 49. Here's what Reuter had to say:

"Cosgrove made his MLB debut on April 29, just a few weeks before his 27th birthday, and he ended up being a staple in the San Diego bullpen. In 54 appearances, he had a 1.75 ERA and 0.98 WHIP, and his go-to slider from a low arm slot made him a difficult matchup for lefties and righties alike."

In a bullpen that had a 3.80 team ERA, Cosgrove was second on the team in personal earned run average behind Josh Hader.

Other than his great ERA, Cosgrove had a 44/19 strikeout-to-walk ratio and only gave up 31 hits in his 51.1 innings of work.

Cosgrove was one of the top rookies to come out of the bullpen in the league. He ranked towards the top of rookies in ERA with at least 50 innings pitched on the season.

The Padres are now expected to use Cosgrove in a bigger role in the 2024 season.
