Padres News: San Diego Feels Confident Where Farm System Is At
Almost all of the hype surrounding the Padres franchise right now is geared towards their star power and that is definitely for the right reasons. The front office has dedicated hundreds of millions of dollars to bring in some of the best MLB talent so San Diego can contend for rings for years to come.
But let's take a quick look at the roster and be realistic while we're at it. Four of their highest-paid players are age 30 and above in Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, Yu Darvish, and Joe Musgrove. While they have not shown any signs of slowing down just yet, it's always smart to prepare for the future.
And San Diego's coaching staff certainly believes they have. Despite a ton of top prospects heading out the door thanks to Soto's blockbuster trade last season, they still house some of the best young talent. Jackson Merrill certainly looks like he will get serious run at shortstop in the future and Luis Campusano has already been slated to take over Austin Nola's catcher role at some point.
When speaking to The San Diego-Union Tribune, Chris Kemp showcased a lot of faith in their current farming system. Kemp oversees the Padres' domestic and international scouting departments.
"I just feel very confident in our player development and our scouts,” said Kemp. “I think we’re creating a really deep farm system right now, so I’m really excited about the talent in camp.”

It's going to be exciting to see how the Padres set up their future for after this current era of superstars. However, it's also great to know that era won't be over for a while.
