A pair of unfortunate developments hit the Padres on Tuesday, shortly before they play the Pittsburgh Pirates in game one of a critical series as they hope to turn their series around.

Starting pitcher Yu Darvish will miss his scheduled start Tuesday night with an illness, and Reiss Kneir will make the spot start in his stead.

Kneir has had a poor season, pitching to the tune of a 12.27 ERA in three appearances for San Diego in 2023, all out of the bullpen.

Nonetheless, he'll need to come up big for a Padres team that's currently nine and a half games behind first in the NL West -- and suddenly missing one of their top end starters.

Also, reliever Steven Wilson was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right pectoral strain.

Drew Carlton was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to take Wilson's place on the active roster, and Carlton has a 3.14 ERA in 14 appearances for the Chihuahuas this year, in addition to pitching for the Padres nine times this season.

The Padres are heading into a crucial portion of their season -- one that could go a long way in determining whether they'll be buyers or sellers during the upcoming August 1 trade deadline.

But at least temporarily, San Diego will be shorthanded while they attempt to right the ship.

They still have big bats in their lineup in the trio of Fernando Tatis Jr., Juan Soto, and Manny Machado, but the loss of Darvish and Wilson could be big hits for a team looking to get their season back on track in a hurry.
