Padres News: San Diego Trades Scott Barlow to Cleveland Ahead of Non-Tender Deadline
The San Diego Padres have officially traded RHP Scott Barlow to the Cleveland Guardians, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
The two sides agreed on a deal just ahead of the non-tender deadline, with the Padres acquiring RHP Enyel De Los Santos.
This deal doesn't come as a surprise, as it was reported that the Padres were actively shopping the right-handed pitcher ahead of Friday's non-tender deadline.
The Padres acquired Barlow from the Kansas City Royals at this past year's trade deadline when they surprisingly decided to buy and push towards a playoff appearance.
Obviously, their plan didn't work, but Barlow was one of the lone bright spots of the deadline for the Padres.
In 25 appearances with San Diego, Barlow had a 3.07 ERA across 29.1 innings. He was one of the most highly sought after relievers on the trade market, and just a few months later, he goes back to the American League Central, this time with Cleveland.
Who is Enyel De Los Santos?
Enyel De Los Santos is a veteran reliever who has spent parts of five seasons in the MLB. He came up with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2018, and spent parts of the 2019 and 2021 seasons with them.
Then, he finished the 2021 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, before spending the last two years in Cleveland.
De Los Santos has a career 4.20 ERA, but had an impressive 3.29 ERA in 70 appearances in 2023.
He's arbitration eligible for the next few seasons, and will be significantly cheaper than Barlow.
MLBTradeRumors expect De Los Santos to make about $1.2 million in 2024, while Barlow was set to make over $7 million. Additionally, Barlow is a free agent at the end of the 2024 season, while De Los Santos has a few years of team control.
