Padres News: Sellout Crowd Displeased With Friars Lackluster Effort in Series Loss
The San Diego Padres ended off their week with yet another loss at home to a struggling Washington Nationals squad as they allowed run after run in an 8-3 Sunday loss.
I touched on how the Padres haven’t necessarily been giving the Petco Park audience the best of shows this season as it seems that every time they enter a close battle with opposing squad heading into the late innings, they squander any lead they had. Their fans remain some of the most loyal in the game and continue selling out numerous days but you have to wonder when the line starts getting drawn with them.
Will the Padres become a franchise that no matter how bad they’re doing, they’ll still be able to make tons of revenue off of their tickets. History doesn’t say so as fans have been lured to the stadium this season with the promise that this squad had championship aspirations on their mind.
Manny Machado and other Friars stars have spoken on the boo’s that occasionally rain down on them when they are underperforming and they’ve said that they have no problem with them when they deserve such actions. Fans in attendance on Sunday had no problem joining together and letting the clubhouse hear it as the Nationals were embarrassing them in their own house.
"Boos at Petco Park. The Nationals have extended their lead to 8-1 on a rally that featured two errors and a hit by pitch. It's been bad before. But now it's getting sloppily bad. The Padres are on the verge of dropping two of three to the Nats, who own the NL's worst record."
Next up for San Diego will be an away series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, who currently hold the fourth spot in the NL Central division. If the Friars cannot handle business against them, A.J. Preller and the rest of the front office will have to hold some long conversations heading into the trade deadline.
