Padres News: ‘Significant Meeting’ Scheduled Right After Season Finale Between Bob Melvin, AJ Preller
After a very frustrating season for the San Diego Padres, they have finally been officially eliminated from postseason contention. To their credit, they stayed alive longer than many thought they would, but the hole that they put themselves in was too large to overcome.
Now they can look to the offseason to try and figure out what exactly went wrong with this year. You can point the finger at multiple things, but something needs to change within this organization. The team entered the season with title aspirations, and they didn’t even qualify for the playoffs.
There will likely be changes to this team, but it remains to be seen how exactly that will be. Right after the season ends this weekend, the Padres will have a meeting to go over everything and figure out a path forward. It will include both General Manager AJ Prellar and Manager Bob Melvin, as they face their potential fates from the disappointing year.
“An internal review is underway, and a significant meeting is scheduled to take place in the 24 hours after Sunday’s season finale. It will involve both men and a broader cast of advisers than usual, as Padres Chairman Peter Seidler recovers from a medical procedure. Those advisers include Padres CEO Erik Greupner and at least one member of Seidler Equity Partners.”

There has been a lot of talk recently about Melvin being let go as the manager, so we could see a change coming soon. Prellar also could be let go, as his aggressiveness to build this team backfired, and now they are left with another lost season.
“Everything has to be on the table,” said one highly placed source.

It’s hard to imagine that neither of the two men lose their jobs after the year the Padres just had. Someone needs to be the fall guy for this season, otherwise, there is no accountability within the organization. However, they both could return as the higher-ups may want to keep the continuity that the team has had and figure out a different way forward.
“Seidler has expressed in recent days that he wants both men to remain in 2024. And that seems to be where this is headed if certain parameters of a productive coexistence can be figured out. But still on that table are Melvin and Preller staying, both being fired or one of them being fired.”

No matter what happens, the Padres need a shift in how they run this team. The all-in approach clearly didn’t work, and now they are left back at the drawing board entering the offseason.
