The San Diego Padres have certainly made splashes in recent years, demonstrating their willingness to invest in star players. They made a bold move by acquiring third baseman Manny Machado in free agency in 2018, and when a standout player becomes available through trades or free agency, the Padres have shown no hesitation in making a move for them.

Although it hasn't resulted in a World Series title, the team is determined to get it done at all costs. The Padres want to get it done this season, and whether they do or don't, this upcoming offseason presents a unique opportunity for the Padres. They will have the opportunity to pursue the biggest free agent ever, the two-way superstar from the Anaheim Angels, Shohei Ohtani

It's no secret that the Friars are highly interested in securing the star slugger and ace. Even if they don't manage to acquire him, sources within the team believe that it won't be due to financial limitations, it will be on Shohei to deny the money owner Peter Seidler will offer him.

"Why would anyone think it's going to be different with Ohtani?" asked one Padres employee. "He might not pick us, but [Seidler] is going to make it damn hard for him to turn us down."

Seidler has demonstrated fearlessness when it comes to paying players he deems deserving, and this mentality has attracted a wealth of talent across all levels of the organization.

They did so last offseason with star shortstop Trea Turner and star outfielder Aaron Judge, who they took a swing on. Nonetheless, Shohei Ohtani would undoubtedly become the centerpiece of the Padres' roster, and the team genuinely has a strong chance of acquiring him, irrespective of the payroll implications.

It may seem impossible, but the team has shown nothing to be impossible when it comes to money. It will be a war to acquire the talents of Shohei, and best believe the Friars will be in the thick of it.
