It should go without much debate that the San Diego Padres 2023 season has been a disaster.

The Padres were expected to come into this season and build on last year's successful campaign, one that ended with the Padres advancing to the NLCS for the first time since 1998.

Unfortunately for the Friars though, the exact opposite has happened.

As of Saturday afternoon, they sit in 4th place in the NL West with a 41-47 record, nine and a half games out of first, and seven and a half out of the last wild card spot.

It's not quite over yet and there's still three months left to play in the regular season, but the Padres are clearly in desperation mode if they hope to make the playoffs.

Which brings them to their series against the New York Mets.

The two teams began a series on Friday, a battle of the two most disappointing teams in baseball relative to spring training expectations.

The Padres lost on Friday night, and it got even worse for them beyond that.

San Diego second baseman Ha-Seong Kim left the game after kicking a water cooler in frustration. He was angry after he was tagged out trying to stretch a double into a triple.

Unfortunately for Kim, the cooler was full, leading to a jammed big toe for the infielder and him being contrite postgame, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic.

Fortunately the consequences weren't worse for Kim as he's just considered day-to-day with all of the bones in his toe intact, but it's another setback for a Padres team in the midst of a spiral, and this one is very much self-inflicted.

Hopefully for the Padres Kim will be able to be in the lineup on Saturday, but it's a lesson learned nonetheless for the 27 year old, even if it was an embarrassing one to have to absorb.
