Padres News: Xander Bogaerts Not Satisfied With His Opening Day Performance
There were certain doubters of the San Diego Padres that looked at the $280 million contract that they gave Xander Bogaerts this offseason and laughed. They believed that that was too much for a 30-year-old shortstop and looked at it as yet another move that the Friars spent much money on.
However, out of the three stars that suited up for the Padres on opening day, Bogaerts was the only one that performed well. He went three for four at bat and also drove in two double's. His presence was immediately felt at the plate and he showcased the slugging ability that attracted the Padres in the first place.
The star infielder wasn't happy with the results of the game and he expressed that he wishes his debut could have ended on a better note. Instead of being content with the number of successful hits he got, Bogaerts instead looked ahead to the Padres' second games against the Rockies and pinpointed where he wants to do better.
"Hitting-wise, everything went for them but also me," said Bogaerts. "In the box, I felt very comfortable. It felt good, especially showing out at home. I take more pride in my defense than my hitting. It works out that my hitting is a little bit better but I really do enjoy defense and saving a run any time is huge. Today wasn't the best game we played for sure, but tomorrow is a new day and we'll hopefully bounce back in a good way."
In 2022, Bogaerts cemented his place among the best shortstops in the league. He ranked within the top 10 percent of players that saved defensive runs and outs. He also converted 98% of routine plays into outs, showing his worth at that spot.
The Padres would not have recruited him and brought him in if they were not completely sold on his two-way talent on the field. They moved their franchise guy in Fernando Tatis Jr. to right field just to have him stay at his natural position.
Bogaerts will look to help the team bounce back tonight.
