The San Diego Padres entered the third inning of their final games against the New York Yankees with a firm 3-2 lead. Yu Darvish had looked pretty solid up until then despite allowing Aaron Judge to take him deep in the first. SD was without one of their own superstars in Juan Soto.

However, they ended the third inning somehow trailing New York 8-3 as Darvish completely fell apart and the Yankees were able to get up to seven hits. Team manager Bob Melvin had no other choice but to pull him out early and this marked his quickest exit from a start since April of 2022.

"Today was the first time Yu Darvish did not get through 5 innings since April 12, 2022. A span of 37 consecutive starts."

Obviously, the rest of the defense played a role in the Yankees being able to generate so many runs in a short amount of time and this is something that Darvish mentioned in his postgame interview.

But he's played this game long enough and he knows that he has to set the tone for the rest of his teammates as starting pitcher.

“Maybe some of the ground balls found some holes through the defenders, some missed locations and them taking advantage of that,” said Darvish. “It seemed everything happened so fast. Obviously, I’m trying to adjust out there, but I think their offense had the upper hand today.”

One of the brighter moments of the game for the Friars was when Jose Azocar was able to successfully round all the bases and complete a little league home run. The Padres were able to make a late-game push and only lose 10-7 but it was that dreadful third inning that hurt them the most.

Jake Cronenworth summed things up the best.

“We played well,” Cronenworth said. “They had the one big inning. … It’s not like we played horrible. We had good at-bats. We battled. We were in it there in the end.”
