Padres Owner Releases Statement Following Disappointing Season, Touches on Future for Organization
Padres owner Peter Seidler released a statement Monday morning as the MLB regular season came to a close.
The Padres were among the favorites to win the World Series before the season began, but they failed to live up to those lofty expectations. A failure to capitalize off of runners in scoring position and an inability to win in extra innings proved to be two of the many nails in the coffin for a roster built of former and current All-Stars.
Seidler seemingly suggested that both president of baseball operations A.J. Preller and manager Bob Melvin would retain their jobs for the 2024 season, although he did not explicitly state as much.
“We entered 2023 with expectations that we would build on last year’s NLCS appearance and contend for a World Series Championship. We fell short of that goal. The Padres organization will learn from this season and emerge in 2024 with the pieces in place to compete for San Diego’s first World Series title. Our current leadership team has my full support, and I have asked them to perform a thorough assessment of our organization, beginning today. We will make the changes necessary to play championship-caliber baseball for our extraordinary fans in 2024.”
Melvin would be in the final year of his four-year, $16 million contract. Preller is signed through the end of the 2026 season.
With a potentially shifting roster, Preller and Melvin will have their hands full if they are to compete with the Dodgers for the top spot in the NL West.
