Padres Playoff Hopes Remain Alive as Marlins vs Mets Suspended, When Will Game Be Finished?
The San Diego Padres have survived their off day and remain mathematically alive for the final NL Wild Card spot — but it wasn't easy.
The game between the Miami Marlins and New York Mets spent three-plus hours in a rain delay, before the teams finally called it off. If the Marlins — who were winning 2-1 at the time of the delay — won the game, the Padres would be eliminated from postseason contention. Instead, the Padres live to see another day.
The big question now is when the game will resume. Marlins general manager Kim Ng had an answer, per Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald.
“Without getting into the details, obviously this is an unfortunate incident. Right now, we’re being told that we'll have to play [the suspended game] on Monday.”
The game would pick right back up where it left off, with two on in the top of the 9th inning and two outs. However, if the Marlins end up clinching the postseason spot, it'll be interesting to see what the league decides to do.
How Can the Padres Still Make the Postseason?
The Padres can still make the postseason if all of the following things happen:
Padres finish the season 3-0 against the Chicago White Sox.
Marlins finish the season 0-4 — losing the suspended game against the Mets and getting swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Chicago Cubs finish the season 0-3 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Cincinnati Reds finish the season either 1-2 or 0-3 against the St. Louis Cardinals.
