Padres RISP Batting Average Dipped Mightly Over The Weekend
Your San Diego Padres are going through a rough patch. They've lost five consecutive games and are 1-7 in their last eight games. They dropped two out of three in their matchup against the Minnesota Twins, and it didn't get any easier as they got swept by their division rivals Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dodgers went into that series as the hottest team in the game right now, and San Diego went into it as a team who struggled with runners in scoring position (RISP), and it got worse by the end of the weekend series.
The San Diego Padres could only muster four runs in three games and came up with a fat donut on Sunday. The Friars went 0-for-9 on Sunday with RISP, dropping their team batting average in that category to .198.
Padres superstar Manny Machado spoke to Padres insider AJ Cassavell and displayed his frustrations.
“Yeah, we’re pressing, for sure,” said Machado, not one to acknowledge such things lightly. “We want to win the [freaking] game. That’s what it’s about. It’s about winning, and we’re not playing good baseball right now.”
It's been frustrating to witness this team, with this talent, not get the job done and struggle mightily in a department they should be thriving in. Padres manager Bob Melvin also discussed their struggles and said their preparation isn't the problem.
“Look, what the hitting coaches do, they prepare them well in our meetings, individually,” Melvin said. “We have basically four guys. They do a great job individually with each guy. Our preparation before games, breaking down the pitchers and so forth, I think is really good.”
San Diego will look to dust off the cobwebs this week at home against the Kansas City Royals and Boston Red Sox. Let's hope they catch their stride soon.
