Padres Rumors: Bob Melvin Expected to Bring Current SD Coach to Giants
Manager Bob Melvin is set to become former San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin sometime today. The skipper interviewed with the San Francisco Giants’ for their vacant managerial job and, according to reports, nailed the interview.
With Melvin heading back up to the Bay Area there are some expectations that he'll be bringing a trusted lieutenant of his with him. Current Friars third base coach Matt Williams
According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Melvin “would be likely” to bring Padres third base coach Matt Williams along with him from San Diego to San Francisco.
Williams and Melvin have mostly been working together over the last six seasons with Williams serving as the A's third base coach in 2018 and 2019 before joining the Padres for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
Williams also was a major league manager for the Washington Nationals for two seasons in 2014 and 2015.
Returning to the Bay Area, Williams will be welcomed. He was a star from the glory years and helped to lead the Giants to the 1989 World Series where they lost to the Athletics.
Before the 1997 season, the Giants traded Williams to the Cleveland Indians. After spending a season there, Williams signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks and helped them win the 2001 World Series against the New York Yankees. In 2003, he retired from playing.
The Padres will likely hire an entirely new coaching staff to work under their next manager (and, of course the hands-on A.J. Preller). According to multiple reports, Mike Shildt is the leading candidate to take over in San Diego.
