Padres Rumors: Bob Melvin Will Become Next Giants Manager
As has been widely expected, the Giants are set to name Bob Melvin as their next manager. The Padres granted the San Francisco organization permission to interview the veteran skipper over the weekend and, according to Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic, the process moved quickly.
After a swift interview process, they are poised to announce the hiring of Bob Melvin, sources briefed on the matter told

While Melvin has another year and $4 million on the 3-year deal he signed with the Padres after leaving the A's in the 2021-2022 offseason, he'll forgo that salary for a fresh start back in the Bay Area.
The writing has been on the wall in San Diego. Reports of tension between Melvin and head of baseball operations A.J. Preller made it clear that a change was needed. The organization did what it could to alter the narrative with calculated statements from Preller and Padres chairman Peter Seidler in recent weeks. Still, behind the scenes, the club is rumored to have been begging for this outcome.
Despite the drama, Melvin's short tenure with the Padres was mostly successful, all things considered. The club posted a .528 winning percentage over the 2022 and 2023 seasons (171-153) and made it to the NLCS in 2022. Still, with sky-high expectations in 2023, things quickly fell apart for the organization which struggled to get over the .500 mark until the final week of the season.
Preller is widely expected to name Mike Shildt as the next manager of the Padres, but that still may come after a short interview process with several outside candidates.
