Padres Rumors: Insider Reveals 2 Candidates Have Emerged as Favorites for Friars Managerial Job
After the San Diego Padres allowed former manager Bob Melvin to leave to manage the San Francisco Giants, the team now has their own search ahead of them. They have a solid core of talent on the roster, so finding someone to take over shouldn't be too difficult.
MLB insider Jon Heyman of The New York Post provided some insight in who the Padres could be leaning toward hiring to take over their open position.
“In-house candidates Ryan Flaherty and Mike Schildt are favorites for the Padres job. Some would be surprised to see the Padres go for a first-timer considering their star-studded team, but Flaherty is beloved by their players. Schildt managed well in St. Louis.”
Per Jon Heyman of The NY Post
Hiring an in-house candidate could be the best course of action for this Padres team, especially since the players already know them. That simple fact could make all the difference in the world, and it could help get the Padres back into playoff contention next season.
At times last year, Melvin was too serious, and it definitely impacted the play on the field for the team. Whoever takes over the job will need to be a little more laid back, and allow the players to be themselves fully to make them feel comfortable.
No matter who the Padres hire, it needs to be the correct choice for this team. They have already gone through a few guys with this core, so it wouldn’t be a good look to have this hire not work out.
San Diego has their hands full this offseason as they try to get themselves back into a place of contention. Many around the league are interested in what the Padres will do, and they will certainly be monitored closely.
