Padres Rumors: Insider Thinks Friars Could Create Chaos By Signing MLB's Waived Players
The Los Angeles Angels shocked the MLB world when they placed six starters on waivers on Tuesday, including starting pitcher Lucas Giolito, bullpen arms Matt Moore and Reynaldo Lopez and outfielder Hunter Renfroe.
The team was essentially waving the white flag on the 2023 season, and hoping some of the MLB's contenders would swoop in, pick up their players and, more importantly, take on the rest of their contracts.
The Angels weren't the only team to place players on waivers, though, as the Yankees placed OF Harrison Bader on waivers while the Mets placed starter Carlos Carrasco on waivers, among others.
The waivers benefit the teams at the bottom of the standings, as the team with the league's worst record gets first dibs on claiming a player.
Then, the order continues to go in the inverse of the standings, all the way up to the best team in baseball, the Atlanta Braves, who have the last waiver spot.
The San Diego Padres, at 62-72, are in the bottom portion of the league in terms of record. Their season is all but over, but with the payroll they have, you know they aren't going to give up on this season — if they were giving up, they would have done what the Angels just did.
And rather than giving up, the team can create some chaos with these waivers by claiming just about anyone and everyone they want.
The Padres will come before all the Wild Card contenders, and could theoretically nab everyone off of waivers.
While they won't take everyone, Rustin Dodd and Stephen J. Nesbitt of The Athletic think they could still make some noise come the waiver deadline.
"Giolito could replace Rich Hill or Pedro Avila. Bader could start in center. The bullpen could use a restock. The more you think about it, the more you wonder whether this was the moment the Padres were waiting for, positioning themselves for, all this time."

With all the injuries the Padres have endured, it would definitely make sense for them to grab a couple pitchers, especially if Yu Darvish does have to undergo Tommy John surgery.
The deadline for the waivers is Thursday morning at 10 a.m. PT. Watch out for the Padres to make some serious noise, and block some other contenders from getting these prized players.
