Padres Rumors: Potential Bob Melvin Replacement Revealed if Team Fires Him
The rumors of the San Diego Padres demise have been greatly exaggerated. Okay, well not exactly, but the team has been playing much better baseball of late. They went 5-1 over the course of last week, and have started this week on the right foot.
It has helped them keep their slim playoff hopes alive as we enter into the final two weeks of the season. But this entire season, the Padres have struggled to put together any sort of consistency on the field, and it has cost them in the standings. Only now are they finally playing up to par.
It has been an incredibly frustrating year for everyone involved, and it could result in them missing the postseason. If they do end up missing the playoffs, San Diego could look to make some real changes to their personnel. This would likely start with manager Bob Melvin being let go.
If Melvin is let go, the Padres could look in-house for his replacement, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman of The New York Post.
“Bench coach Ryan Flaherty is a rumored Padres managerial candidate if Bob Melvin moves on.”
Per Jon Heyman of The NY Post
Firing Melvin may not be the correct move, but it would make sense. Anytime a team underwhelms like the Padres have this season, someone has to answer for the struggles. That someone would be Melvin in all likelihood.
So the Padres only have a short time left to try and turn things around. While things do look bleak, there is still a chance, and they won’t quit until officially eliminated.
This hasn’t been the year that the Padres were hoping for when the season started, but sometimes that is just the way the cookie crumbles. They will continue fighting for their playoff lives down the stretch and just hope for the best.
