Padres Score: Bullpen Fails To Hold 5-1 Lead After Machado's Ejection
Everything seemed to trending in the right direction at the beginning of the San Diego Padres Tuesday afternoon match against the Diamondbacks. Even though Manny Machado got thrown out over a dispute with the umpire, it looked like they were set to win their fourth straight game upon a solid debut from Yu Darvish.
However, once Darvish wrapped up for the night, everything went downhill. Let's take a deep-dive into what happened.
Austin Nola got the ball rolling for the Friars with a single that brought Jake Croneworth in for an easy run.
Nelson Cruz adds to the growing list of guys on the squad that are taking opposing pitchers the distance. He recorded his first home run as a Padre and made the score 2-0 in the fourth inning.
However, the Diamondbacks started to get some action going off their own. Josh Rojas' flyable got caught in the fifth inning but it allowed Geraldo Perdomo to get their first run of the day.
Unfortunately for Arizona, it looks like Xander Bogaerts is truly gunning for that MVP trophy this season. We witnessed his third home run of the season in that same inning and it also brought Juan Soto home.
This were things took a turn for the worse, Padres fans. Yu Darvish's time at the mound came to an end and, considering his slow warm-up for this season, he still put the Friars in a great position to win. The 36-year-old allowed only three hits and one run in his five innings.
Nabil Crismatt relieved him and the Diamondbacks saw instant production at the plate after that.
A mix of singles and doubles from Rojas, Perdomo, and Jose Herrera over the next two innings saw the game change from San Diego leading 5-1 to them now trailing 7-5.
Domingo Tapia, Luis Garcia, and Brent Honeywell all attempted to mend the fire started by Arizona but could not do so. It's been a constant trend of the Padres' bullpen just falling apart in losses and it will need to be addressed.
One last bright note for San Diego was Trent Grisham once again connecting on a solo home run that gave the Friars their final run of the day.
The Padres have Wednesday but will hit the field on Thursday to start their road series against the Atlanta Braves at 4:20 pm PT.
