Padres Score: Yu Darvish Burns Out in 7th Inning, San Diego Scoreless in Loss
There was a ton of fresh history coming into this Monday afternoon game. The San Diego Padres took down the New York Mets in last year's wild card series 2-1 and we got the long-awaited rematch of not only those two but also starting pitchers Yu Darvish and Max Scherzer. However, the Mets got their revenge with a 5-0 win.
The Friars did not even get their first hit until a Ha-Seong Kim single in the fifth inning. They certainly kept Max Scherzer working in all five innings that he took the mound because even though they couldn't get hits, he still threw 97 pitches. However, Yu Darvish was forced
Jeff McNeil was able to break the silence for both sides as he notched a two-run double in the third inning. Fransisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo ran in and it was just a wild play overall.
Their bomb to home plate was off target and allowed Nimmo to get the second run.
San Diego had plenty of opportunities to get hits with fastballs from Scherzer that flew down the middle but they just failed to capitalize early on.
The Friars community were voicing their concerns all over Twitter.
As mentioned previously, Max Scherzer was having himself quite the productive game but those pitches were stacking up and an 11-pitch at-bat from Austin Nola at the top of the fifth inning was the last straw for the coaching staff.
It was Nola's longest plate appearance of his career and it truly felt like he was going to stay there forever.
Fast-forward to the sixth inning and Xander Bogaerts just continues to be the MVP of San Diego so far.
Unfortunately, it was not a home run like we would've hoped but Pete Alonso grounded to middle and Bogaerts was able to make a smooth dive to snag it and immediately throw him out at first... take a look for yourself.
Once the seventh inning came around, we finally saw another run as Eduardo Escobar connected on a sacrifice hit that allowed Mark Canha to extend the Mets' lead to 3-0.
Yu Darvish had remained on the mound this entire time but Tim Hill relieved him after this play.
Luis Guillomre then gave us one of the most impressive bunts of far this season.
Unfortunately, this pattern of events then led to a Fransisco Lindor double that brought Guillorme and Nimmo home to make their lead 5-0.
This would be the final run of the game and the Padres fall to 6-5 on the year. However, they'll get another shot at them Tuesday at 4:10 pm PT.
