The Padres got a much-needed win over the San Francisco Giants Saturday night, as every win at this point in the season could be considered much-needed.

San Diego sits 9 games below a .500 record and 6.5 games behind for a spot in the NL Wild Card. With only 25 games remaining, the Padres require nothing short of a miracle in order to make the playoffs.

After the Friars' win Saturday night, Padres manager Bob Melvin shared that he's not giving up until San Diego is officially down for the count.

“There’s not an ‘X’ next to our name yet,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said. “We’re still playing for something, and that’s to win as many games as we can here and hopefully win a lot in a row. It hasn’t happened for us this year, but as long as there’s games left we’ll be motivated to win as many as we can.”

Melvin has received a lot of criticism this season for the poor performance San Diego has consistently shown on the diamond, but his players have been vocal in their support for the manager approaching his third and final year on his contract.

Whether Melvin is terminated prior to the completion of his three-year deal likely won't be affected by the Padres' missing the playoffs, as that has felt inevitable at times this season. But the root problems, the swirling rumors of a broken clubhouse and a lack of effort could come into play.

With injuries further diminishing the Padres' chances of making a playoff push, San Diego fans might want to begin daydreaming about the offseason — during which San Diego could re-sign two of the best pitchers in baseball, join the many teams courting Shohei Ohtani or trade away some of their own superstars.
