Padres Will Not Receive Compensation from Giants for Bob Melvin
Bob Melvin is officially the manager of the San Francisco Giants. In an introductory press conference on Wednesday morning, Melvin was all smiles as he joined his hometown team on a three year deal.
In the presser, Farhan Zaidi, the Giants' president of baseball operations, revealed that the Padres will not be receiving any compensation from the rival NL West club.
That in and of itself is not surprising. The Oakland Athletics did not receive and compensation when allowing Melvin to leave for the Padres job.
Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller met with media over Zoom on Wednesday and explained that the team “didn’t want to cloud the process,” when it came to trying to get compensation from the Giants. "It was more about what’s right.”
What the Padres do get is off the hook for the remaining one year and $4 million salary owed to Melvin for the 2024 season. It may not be massive, but as the organization looks to reduce spending after a costly year, every little bit will help.
The club will also save a bit more as third base coach Matt Williams is rumored to be likely to follow Melvin to San Francisco.
Preller and the Padres will move forward in the hunt for a new manager and won't have to go too far with reports mentioning former Cardinals manager Mike Shildt as the most likely successor in San Diego. Shildt is currently listed as the "senior advisor to player development" but has worn several hats since joining the organization ahead of the 2022 season. He's expressed interest in returning to managing and, according to insiders, he and Preller are aligned when it comes to their way of thinking.
It wouldn't be shocking to see a new manager named no later than next week.
