Should the Padres be Worried About Michael King's Injury History?
It's been just a week since the San Diego Padres made their blockbuster trade with the New York Yankees sending Juan Soto and Trent Grisham for a handful of pitchers and a catcher.
Despite making a trade that will set the Padres pitching staff up for long-term success, there may be some concern regarding right-handed pitcher Michael King.
King has consistently pitched in the majors over the last three years. During that time, King has dealt with two significant injuries, including a gruesome elbow injury that ended his 2022 season.
According to an article written by Eno Sarris of The Athletic, the biggest question that surrounds King coming into next season is if he will be able to replicate his success from 2023 as King pitched in 104 2/3 innings.
"Last year’s 104 2/3 innings was the most he’d put up since 2017’s 149, and he’s suffered some significant injuries recently." Said Sarris, "The
Yankees
have been cautious with his workload, limiting him to fewer than 80 pitches in six of his nine starts last season. He held his velocity and stuff even as he expanded his pitch count, but his injury history is probably part of why he was even available to be a part of this trade."
Per Eno Sarris of The Athletic
Last season was one of King's most productive in his career. Aside from remaining healthy, King pitched with a 2.75 ERA and struck out 127 batters. He also had a 10.92 K/9 and a 3.97 K/BB ratio.
If King's health can continue to trend the same way it did last year, he would likely be one of the more reliable names for the Padres next season.
