Tragedy struck the entire baseball world late Tuesday morning, as the San Diego Padres announced that owner Peter Seidler had passed away at the age of 63. The cause of death is unknown, but Seidler had been recovering from an undisclosed procedure that he had back in September.

Seidler was beloved in the city of San Diego, and he was fully committed to building a consistent winner in the city. His dream was always to see the Padres win a World Series, but unfortunately, it never came to fruition.

But his commitment to excellence helped the Padres become major players across baseball over the last few years, and he remained devoted to them winning. His financial commitments far exceeded other small-market teams, simply because he never looked at the Padres as a small-market franchise.

The baseball world is now in mourning, and the world lost a great man. Fans all over will miss him and they took to social media to show their grief.

Teams all across the league also put out statements in support of the Padres, and it was nice to see the entire league coming together in this unfortunate moment.

San Diego CEO Erik Greupner put out a statement about the passing.

“The Padres organization mourns the passing of our beloved Chairman and owner, Peter Seidler,” said Padres CEO Erik Greupner. “Today, our love and prayers encircle Peter’s family as they grieve the loss of an extraordinary husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. Peter was a kind and generous man who was devoted to his wife, children, and extended family. He also consistently exhibited heartfelt compassion for others, especially those less fortunate. His impact on the city of San Diego and the baseball world will be felt for generations."

On Tuesday afternoon, the Padres will be opening the Home Plate Gate at Petco Park for any fans who wish to pay their respects. Seidler will forever be missed, and the Padres organization will never be the same.
