What Are the Padres Sending Back to the White Sox in the Dylan Cease Trade?
The San Diego Padres shocked the baseball world when ESPN's Jeff Passan reported they were acquiring right-handed pitcher Dylan Cease from the Chicago White Sox.
The Cease sweepstakes, which had been going on for years, finally came to a close, and the Padres came out victorious.
It took a while for the return package to be revealed, but finally, we know what the Padres are sending back to Chicago for Cease — at least a part of it. And it's a haul.
Here's the trade details we know as of now:
Padres receive: Dylan Cease
White Sox receive: No. 5 prospect Drew Thorpe, No. 8 prospect Jairo Iriarte, reliever Steven Wilson, No. 7 prospect Samuel Zavala
The White Sox have held firm on their asking price for Cease, and it was clearly going to take a lot for them to part with their ace.
Cease struggled in 2023 to the tune of a 4.58 ERA in 33 starts, but he's one year removed from a 2022 season in which he had a 2.20 ERA in 32 starts and finished second in American League Cy Young voting.
Cease is also only 28 years old, under two years of team control and is due $8 million this year.
All those things gave Chicago leverage in waiting for a package that they felt was reasonable.
It was reported on Tuesday that the White Sox were extensively scouting the Padres this spring, and clearly, it was not for nothing.
They got two talented prospects from San Diego, and in exchange, the Padres shored up a rotation that had tons of question marks.
Thorpe and Iriarte combined to throw 10 scoreless innings this Cactus League. Thorpe is 23 years old and had a 2.52 ERA across High-A and Double-A last year, while Iriarte is 22 years old and had a 3.49 ERA across High-A and Double-A last year.
As for Wilson, he has a 3.48 ERA in 102 appearances across the last two seasons. He's been one of the most consistent members of San Diego's bullpen since 2022.
Zavala, the latest known addition to the package, is just 19 years old and slashed .243/.391/.406 across Single-A and High-A last year.
