Schwarber Blasts Milestone Home Run In Phillies Victory
One more loss and the Philadelphia Phillies would have suffered through their worst start since 1934.
Thankfully, Kyle Schwarber wouldn’t let that happen.
Schwarber blasted his 200th career home run on the second pitch of the game and the Phillies defeated the New York Yankees 4-1 on Tuesday.
Schwarber, who led the National League with 46 home runs last season, added an RBI single for the Phillies, who rebounded after an 0-4 start. During those four losses – three to the Texas Rangers and one to the Yankees – the Phillies had been outscored 37-12.
After a 1-for-17 skid to open this season, Schwarber deposited Domingo German’s second pitch into the right field seats.
It was a much-needed boost for the defending NL champion Phillies, who had looked pretty bad for large parts of the first four games.
“It feels good,” Schwarber said. “I think the biggest thing is being able to start with a lead. I think the personal accomplishments, those things kind of will come after you’re done playing. Cool stat, definitely a cool thing but happy about the win.”
Even though the Phillies got off to a slow start, they have more than enough firepower in their lineup to come back with plenty of wins. Bryce Harper is out until between mid-May and mid-July and Rhys Hoskins is lost for the season following successful ACL surgery.
The Phillies will need production from Schwarber and they got it on Tuesday.
Look for more power numbers and more victories.
Remember the Phillies started 3-10 in 2007 and made the playoffs.
They started 2-4 in ’08 and won the World Series.
An 0-4 start this season was no reason to worry.
When Schwarber gets hot – and he will – the wins will pile up.
